The club members use a MTI Polaroid camera to take two pictures of the child's eyes. One image above the other. the photos can be interpreted by an optometrist as to the possible existence of conditions threatening life-long damage to eyesight. We screen over 500 kindergarden and Head Start children in Carlsbad, Loving and St. Edward Schools.

The club has funded hundreds of eye examinations and glasses for needy children. The children are referred to us by the school nurse. The children go to an optometrist of their choice and the club reimburses up to $175 for the eye exam and glasses.

Thousands of pairs of used glasses have been collected for shipment and distribution to the poor in old Mexico. We have boxes at many locations around Carlsbad, including the post office, for people to drop off their old glasses. Lion Johnny Washburn then goes to the collection sites and boxes them up for shipment.

The Club donates to a number of youth, community, and Lion programs including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Boy's and Girl's Club, Christmas Anonymous, Class Act, Falcon Fest, 4th of July Fireworks, Special Olympics, Carlsbad Community Concerts (with tickets being donated to the retirement homes), United Way, Operation Wounded Warrior, Canine Companions, SECJ Livestock Board, NMSU-Carlsbad Scholarship, Leader Dog, LCIF, Lions Eye Bank, Lions Eye Foundation, CARC, Riverblitz, Landsun Caring Hands, Lakeview, Relay for Life, Operation Comfort, and MLK Scholarship to name a few.

Lions signs completed and set at all entrances to Carlsbad on highways thanks to Lion Johnny Washburn.

In March, the Carlsbad Downtown Lions and the Carlsbad Heights Lions joined together to provide eye screenings for residents at the Carlsbad Health Fair.
