Operation Kids Sight

The club members use a Plusoptix S09 digital camera system to take a picture of the child's eyes. The photos give an instant pass/fail reading. We screen over 1,000 kindergarden and Head Start children in Carlsbad, Loving and at many other private schools in Carlsbad. If we find that the child fails our screeening, we send a note home to the parents to advise them to get their child seen by a professional. If they cannot afford this, our club will pay $175 towards the eye exam and glasses.

Lions Recycle for Sight

Thousands of pairs of used glasses have been collected for shipment to Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers which clean, clasify by prescription and distribute them to developing countries for those in need. We have boxes at many locations around Carlsbad, including Carlsbad National Bank, Dr. Griffith, Dr. Lim, The Eye Site, Fashion Eyeworks, Loving Elementary School, NMSU-Carlsbad, U-Store It, San Jose Senior Center, Senior Citizens Center on Mesa, Walmart and Western Commerce Bank, Landsun Manor, CEMRC, and Lakeview Christian Home for people to drop off their old glasses.

New Glasses for Children

The club has funded hundreds of eye examinations and glasses for needy children. The children are referred to us by the school nurse. The children go to an optometrist of their choice and the club reimburses up to $175 for the eye exam and glasses.

Community Donations

The Club donates to a number of youth and community organizations including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Boy's and Girl's Club, Christmas Anonymous, Class Act, Falcon Fest, 4th of July Fireworks, Special Olympics, Carlsbad Community Concerts (with tickets being donated to the retirement homes), United Way, Operation Wounded Warrior, Canine Companions, SECJ Livestock Board, NMSU-Carlsbad Scholarship, CARC, Riverblitz, Landsun Caring Hands, Lakeview, Relay for Life, Operation Comfort, and MLK Scholarship to name a few.

Lions Programs Donations

Lions signs completed and set at all entrances to Carlsbad on highways thanks to Lion Johnny Washburn.

In March, the Carlsbad Downtown Lions and the Carlsbad Heights Lions joined together to provide eye screenings for residents at the Carlsbad Health Fair. The picture on the left shows Lions Gemma Ferguson and Kay Doss getting ready to register folks who wish to be screened. Lions pictured on the right are: (L-R) Kay Doss, PDG Stan Bode, Club Pres. Bobby St. John (Carlsbad Heights), Frank Bertagnoli, Dr. Lim, Gemma Ferguson, Gloria Davis, and Club Pres. Melissa Washburn.
